Hanuma Jayanti is given here on the full moon of Chaitra. Karnataka claims Hanuman as its own: Anjanadri, a hill at Anegundi across the river from Hampi, is held to be where Anjana gave birth to him. Many in the state also keep his day in the month of Margashira, as Hanuma Vrata, and both dates draw pilgrims up the five hundred and seventy-five steps.

The story

Hanuman is the chief of gods for the Madhva tradition of Karnataka, which sees him reborn as Bhima and then as the philosopher Madhvacharya of Udupi.

The sixteenth-century saint Vyasaraja is said to have installed seven hundred and thirty-two images of Hanuman across the south; the Yantrodharaka Hanuman at Hampi, seated in a mystic diagram, is his.

Why this date

This calendar gives Hanuma Jayanti on Chaitra Purnima, on the day the full-moon tithi is present at sunrise. Many in Karnataka observe Hanuma Vrata on Margashira Shukla Trayodashi instead.
